Hawke's Bay
Cape Kidnappers
#6 in NZ
GOLF Magazine #65 World
Perched more than 400 feet above the Pacific Ocean on the dramatic cliffs of Hawke's Bay, Cape Kidnappers is one of the world's most spectacular golfing destinations. Designed by renowned architect Tom Doak and opened in 2004, the course combines breathtaking scenery with strategic championship golf, earning consistent recognition among the world's top-ranked layouts.
Doak has described Cape Kidnappers as "an epic," encouraging golfers to savour both the game and the extraordinary setting because "you may never play golf somewhere like this again." Commissioned by American philanthropist Julian Robertson after his experience at Bandon Dunes, the project transformed an extraordinary clifftop property into a golf course unlike any other, with panoramic views stretching across Hawke's Bay and fairways that trace dramatic ridgelines above the sea.
Rather than traditional links terrain, Cape Kidnappers is shaped by a series of rugged headlands and deep ravines that descend toward the ocean. Firm playing surfaces, coastal winds, and bold bunkering reward creativity and precision, while several holes require exhilarating carries between ridges and approaches played perilously close to the cliff's edge. Signature moments, including the unforgettable sixth and fifteenth holes, create a sense of golfing on the edge of the world.
Set within a 6,000-acre working sheep and cattle station, the course is complemented by the luxury Rosewood Cape Kidnappers resort and surrounded by Cape Sanctuary, one of New Zealand's largest privately funded wildlife restoration projects. Protected by more than 10 kilometres of predator-proof fencing, the sanctuary provides a haven for rare native birds and enriches the golfing experience with a remarkable natural environment.
Reflecting on the project, Doak has spoken fondly of the adventure of building in such an extraordinary location and continues to regard Cape Kidnappers as one of the most distinctive works in his portfolio. The result is a course that seamlessly blends world-class architecture, dramatic landscapes, and environmental stewardship to deliver one of the most unforgettable golf experiences anywhere in the world.
