Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary offers one of the most distinctive golfing experiences in the world — an acclaimed championship course set within New Zealand's first predator-free wildlife sanctuary. Nestled among native forests and geothermal landscapes near Taupō, the 18-hole parkland layout seamlessly combines world-class golf with environmental conservation, creating a setting where endangered kiwi and takahē, fallow deer, and abundant birdlife coexist alongside immaculate fairways and greens.

Originally commissioned by the New Zealand government to promote tourism to the Lake Taupō region, the course was designed by Commander John Harris with Michael Wolveridge and Peter Thomson and officially opened in 1970. Built to championship standards, it features rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways, undulating greens, and more than 100 strategically placed bunkers that reward precision and thoughtful course management. Signature holes, including the formidable 608-yard par-five 14th — known as "The Rogue" — provide both challenge and memorable drama.
